Halifax Life

Halifax is a vibrant, energentic city with a young, friendly population. In Halifax you can easily find shopping centres, movie theatres, restaurants, nightclubs, cafes, sports arenas, art galleries and museums. Halifax is the largest city east of Quebec. 

Culture

Downtown Halifax is a major cultural centre in the Atlantic Provinces. While living in Halifax, you can use your free time to enjoy some exciting activities in our great city. Just a short distance from ECLC, you can find restaurants, cafes, movie theatres, malls, specialty shops, nightclubs, pubs, bars, theatres, universities, libraries and many other exciting attractions. 

Halifax also plays host to a number of exciting festivals each year, including: The Halifax Busker Festival (street performers), The Atlantic Film Festival, Greekfest (Greek dancing and food), The Atlantic Jazz Festival (more than 450 musical performances), The Multicultural Festival, Shakespeare by the Sea (outdoor theatre located near the Halifax Harbour) and periodic Tall Ship Events (gathering of more than 30 world class sailing ships).

Language

Halifax is an English speaking city which is perfect for learning and developing English skills. People in Halifax speak in a typical Canadian accent and are easy to understand.  They are friendly and are interested in talking to international students.

Education

Currently, Halifax has a population of almost 400,000 people. 50,000 of the people living in the city are students. Halifax is home to seven universities and colleges and East Coast Language College!

Climate

Halifax is not as cold as people think. It is actually warmer than most cities in Canada. It is also recognized for having four extremely distinct seasons for you to enjoy. Average daily temperatures are 10 to 15°C in the spring, 25 to 30°C in the summer, 10 to 15° in the autumn and -1 to +10°C in winter. 

Travel

Halifax is just two hours away from many other interesting and exciting cities such as Toronto, Montreal and Quebec. It is even close to London, England which is only a short 5 hour flight from the Halifax International Airport. New York City and Boston are only two short hours away and you can clear US customs in Halifax before boarding the plane.

Entertainment

The city is also home to several sport teams including the Halifax Mooseheads ice hockey team and the Halifax Rainmen basketball team.  Halifax has also hosted a number of major music events including The Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, Great Big Sea, Black Eyed Peas and many more.
